Telecommunications perform an essential role in the economic and social development of Kiribati. In a few years back there was a restructuring in the Telecommunications sector. In July 2005 Telecommunications Authority of Kiribati (TAK) was established after the enactment of the Telecommunications Act. It first started its operation in July 2005 with 5 Board of Directors appointed by the Honorable Minister for the Ministry of Communications Transport and Tourism Development, including the chairman, the Chief Executive Officer and a Radio Licensing Officer.
